A Rare Case of Spontaneous Hemothorax Secondary to Solitary Fibrous Tumor of Pleura: A Case Report
Solitary fibrous tumor of the pleura (SFTP) is a rare neoplasm, typically detected incidentally on chest radiography. It is less common than mesothelioma and generally follows a benign clinical course. Rarely, SFTP can present as a spontaneous hemothorax. We describe the case of an elderly male who presented with acute breathlessness and left-sided chest pain. Initial evaluation revealed a left-sided hemothorax. Further imaging revealed a left-sided pleural lesion, which showed no significant fluorodeoxyglucose uptake on positron emission tomography scan. After hemothorax drainage, a computed tomography–guided biopsy was performed and histopathological examination confirmed the diagnosis of a solitary fibrous tumor. The patient underwent open thoracotomy with wide local excision and recovered uneventfully. Early and complete surgical resection of SFTP is curative in nearly 90% of cases. However, long-term follow-up is recommended for the early detection of recurrence.
