Protecting Heritage: Blue Shield Belgium’s Response to Floods
In July 2021, significant flooding in Wallonia severely impacted various cultural heritage sites, prompting the Belgian Committee of the Blue Shield (Blue Shield Belgium – BSB) to play a vital role in recovery efforts. Established in 2000, BSB is a non–profit organisation with approximately 70 members dedicated to protecting and safeguarding cultural heritage during crises. The association mobilised swiftly after the floods, implementing a structured response that included on–site first aid, coordinating over 200 volunteers, participating in an ad hoc crisis committee, and facilitating communication and logistical exchanges among stakeholders. Key initiatives involved the recovery of artworks, documents, and archaeological artefacts, as well as the establishment of emergency protocols and a central emergency number. BSB also sought to enhance its operational capacity through structural funding, leading to the establishment of a permanent secretariat for effective communication and crisis management. This disaster heightened awareness of the importance of cultural heritage preservation in emergencies among authorities, policymakers, and the public. Going forward, BSB aims to build on these experiences to strengthen its preparedness and collaboration with emergency services, ensuring a robust response to future crises.
