PHOTOCATALYTIC DENITRIFICATION FOR WATER SANITATION IN RECIRCULATION FISH FARMING - STATUS, CHALLENGES AND PERSPECTIVES
Nitrate contamination management is one of the important challenges for successful recirculating fish farming. Denitrifying bioreactors that are most commonly used for this purpose often create additional problems due to incomplete denitrification and accumulation of toxic substances, such as NO2-, NO, and N2O, or excessive reduction with the formation of toxic H2S. This paper describes the basic prerequisites for the efficient application of semiconductor nanomaterials in an environmentally friendly method of photocatalytic nitrate reduction to safe N2. Using the example of conventional TiO2 and a novel 3D ZnO nanomaterial with a flower-like morphology, the challenges and prospects for successful photocatalytic denitrification in water remediation for recirculating fish farming are described.
