THE CORRELATION BETWEEN IMPULSE OSCILLOMETRY PARAMETERS AND RESPIRATORY MUSCLE STRENGTH IN PULMONARY TB PATIENTS

Little information is available about respiratory muscle (RM) function in pulmonary TB patients. Aim: to study the correlation between the parameters of impulse oscillometry (IOS) and RM strength in pulmonary TB patients. TMaterials and methods. The study enrolled 214 patients with confirmed pulmonary TB. We performed measurements of maximal occlusive inspiratory (PImax) and expiratory (PEmax) mouth pressures, IOS test, spirometry, body plethysmography, and lung diffusion testing. The Spearman correlation was established. Results. PImax witnessed moderate correlation, mostly with lung elastic properties: reactance at 5 Hz (X5) (r = 0.39, p < 0.05), area of reactance (АХ) (r = –0.33, p < 0.05), elastance of the respiratory system (ERS) (–0.48, p < 0.05), lung compliance Clung (r = 0.48, p < 0.05). The correlation with other oscillation mechanics parameters was either weak or absent. PEmax witnessed moderate correlation with total respiratory impedance (Z5) (r = –0.36, p < 0.05), resistance at 5 Hz (r = –0.37, p < 0.05), Ers (–0.30, p < 0.05); the correlation with Clung was weak (r = 0.27, p < 0.05). Conclusion. We established the predominance of inspiratory muscle dysfunction in pulmonary TB patients. PImax mostly correlated with IOS parameters, which reflected changes in lung elastic properties. PEmax had more significant correlation with excessive total respiratory impedance.
