Incorporating Religious Education in Higher Education to Address the Moral Crisis of the 21st Century
Moral crises, such as corruption, dishonesty and various forms of intolerance-social, political, religious-are increasing at an alarming rate in today’s society. The role of education in addressing these issues has been widely discussed throughout history and remains relevant today. Whether or not people believe in religion, it remains an inseparable part of the framework of human life. Religion plays a crucial role in fostering moral awareness and cultivating a sense of moral responsibility. Recognizing the importance religion’s role, this article examines the potential of religious education in higher education for moral development, its effectiveness in shaping ethical behavior, and the challenges in implementing it in a secular and multicultural society. This paper argues that if religious education is implemented in an inclusive and purposeful manner-maintaining a balance of diversity and avoiding religious bias- it can effectively contribute to addressing moral crises by fostering ethical behavior and cultivating moral awareness, without undermining secular principles.
