Modelling and Real-Time Simulation of SPWM Controlled Induction Motor Drive with Hardware Validation using Typhoon HIL
This paper presents a comprehensive study on the modelling and hardware validation of Sinusoidal Pulse Width Modulation (SPWM) technique using Typhoon Hardware-in-the-Loop (HIL) software. SPWM is a widely used technique for controlling inverters, offering smooth and efficient power conversion from DC to AC and used in industrial motor drives. In this study, Typhoon HIL’s real-time simulation capabilities is used to develop a robust SPWM model that enables high-fidelity testing and validation without a need for physical prototypes. This method makes it possible to precisely analyze switching losses, harmonic content, and overall system efficiency. The result shows that Typhoon HIL’s modelling environment accurately simulates SPWM dynamics, providing insights to parameter optimisation and operating performance under a variety of loads. This work contributes a valuable tool for researchers and engineers to validate SPWM algorithm in the reduction of THD, optimize inverter designs, and accelerate the development of power electronic applications.
