Multidrug resistant Serratia fonticola: An emerging threat to human health and its implications
Serratia fonticola , a member of the Enterobacteriaceae family, a relatively uncommon human pathogen, is being increasingly recognised as a significant pathogen involved mainly in urinary tract infections (UTI). Despite its rarity, this microorganism has been linked to severe clinical manifestations, particularly in patients with underlying conditions or undergoing invasive procedures. There are increasing reports of multidrug resistance (MDR) among S. fonticola strains causing UTI, further complicating the treatment procedures. This review aims to highlight the evolution of MDR and its mechanisms in S. fonticola causing UTI in humans and their clinical implications. Furthermore, we are providing an update on infections caused by S. fonticola, including MDR strains, current strategies for the treatment, challenges, and future perspectives for effective prevention and control measures.
