Scientometric analysis of Greek publications on stereotactic and functional neurosurgery

• Greece-affiliated authors contributed to 276 functional neurosurgery publications • Most (86.5%) were published post-2008 • Deep brain stimulation and epilepsy research have been the key topics • Approximately half of the collaborative research was with international colleagues • More citations were obtained by lengthier and multi-author publications Stereotactic and functional neurosurgery (SFN) is a rapidly advancing subfield of neurosurgery, highlighting the need to assess contributions from emerging countries like Greece. This study analysed SFN publications affiliated with Greek institutions to map the national research landscape. A Scopus search using SFN-related keywords identified 3,198 publications, of which 276 met inclusion criteria. These were predominantly written in English, with only four in other languages (1 in French and 3 in Greek). The majority (86.5%) were published after 2008. Most publications were articles (54.3%) or reviews (22.1%). Common topics included deep brain stimulation and epilepsy, and the papers were most frequently published in Acta Neurochirurgica or Stereotactic and Functional Neurosurgery. First and corresponding authors were most often Greece-affiliated males. Although 55.2% of the publications involved international collaboration, citation counts did not differ significantly from those with solely national co-authors. Only 27 publications were single-authored, mostly by authors affiliated with institutions in Athens. The 50 top-cited publications had a mean of 116.9 citations and were mainly articles or reviews. Publications with more citations and higher Altmetric scores tended to be longer, include more authors, appear in higher-impact journals, and have a non-Greece-affiliated first author. In conclusion, this is the first scientometric analysis of SFN in Greece, offering a comprehensive overview of publication trends, collaboration patterns, and author demographics. The findings provide insights that may inform national research priorities, institutional funding strategies, and gender inclusion policies within the field.
