Multifunctional nanohybrid of hematite and silver for enhanced heat diffusion and waste water remediation

This work reports the synthesis, characterization and multifunctional application of nanohybrid of hematite with silver prepared via the chemical reduction method. The formation and characteristics of the base sample (α-Fe 2 O 3 ) and the hybrid structure (α-Fe 2 O 3 : Ag) are confirmed using basic characterization techniques like X-ray diffraction, energy dispersive X-ray, field emission scanning electron microscopy, UV-Vis Diffusive Reflective spectroscopy, photoluminescence spectroscopy and zeta potential analysis. Dual beam pump probe method was used to study the heat diffusion characteristics of the samples and the thermal diffusivity values for heat transfer applications. A significant enhancement in the thermal diffusivity, about three-fold as compared to the base fluid, is obtained for the nanohybrid which can find application in heat transfer devices. Also, the photocatalytic degradation of cationic dye Methylene blue was studied to investigate the waste water remediation capability of the samples. The study highlights the possibility of utilizing the nanohybrid as a potential candidate in waste water remediation with a degradation efficiency of 88% in 120 minutes and also in cooling applications. Highlights : • First time report on the thermal diffusivity measurement of α-Fe 2 O 3 : Ag nanohybrid using thermal lens technique. • Significant enhancement in the thermal diffusivity of the base fluid with the inclusion of nanohybrid • Effective visible light photocatalytic degradation of Methylene Blue dye in the presence of the nanohybrid. • Possibility of utilizing the nanohybrid in waste water remediation and heat transfer applications.
