A Hybrid DC Circuit Breaker Based on Arrester Transient Voltage-Assisted Interruption

The Hybrid DC Circuit Breaker (HDCB) serves as a critical equipment for DC fault interruption within VSC-based DC grid. Nevertheless, existing HDCBs face challenges such as slow commutation speed and high loss in the electronic devices of the main branch. In response to these problems, this paper proposes a topology of Hybrid DC Circuit Breaker based on Arrester Transient Voltage-Assisted Interruption (ATVI-HDCB). Firstly, the nonlinear resistance characteristics of the Metal Oxide Varistor (MOV) are analyzed, and the mechanism of its rapid establishment of transient breaking voltage is revealed. Next, the topology and operational principle of the proposed ATVI-DCCB are delineated. Lastly, the efficacy and applicability of the proposed ATVI-HDCB are verified by simulations.
