The study trends and application cases of oyster shell recycling

The oyster aquaculture industry in South Korea has been continuously growing, resulting in a large volume of oyster shells that pose environmental challenges due to inadequate disposal. This study reviews research literature on oyster shells and confirms that they exhibit a porous structure and are primarily composed of calcium carbonate. These characteristics indicate excellent adsorption capabilities and high potential for use as an alternative to limestone. Based on these findings, this paper evaluates the recycling potential of oyster shells by utilizing case studies in the fields of construction materials, fertilizers, and water purification. Furthermore, the cited research results confirm the significant potential of oyster shells as a recyclable resource, emphasizing the need for further studies and technological development for practical application and commercialization. This study introduces recent research trends and application cases to systematically evaluate the recycling potential of oyster shells.
