Circularity of PET Bottles Post-Usage: Insights from the Informal Supply Chain in Bangladesh

The escalating use of polyethylene terephthalate (PET) bottles in the beverage industry, coupled with fragmented waste management systems, underscores critical environmental and economic challenges in densely populated regions like Bangladesh. This study investigates the dynamics of the informal supply chain for post-consumer PET bottles, identifying barriers and opportunities to establish a formalised and efficient recycling framework. Drawing on stakeholder theory, field-based observations, and in-depth interviews with key players in Bangladesh's plastic recycling landscape, the research uncovers actionable pathways for collaboration and systemic improvement. The findings reveal significant untapped economic value in PET recycling and emphasise the urgent need for cohesive efforts by multinational corporations, policymakers, and local recyclers. By outlining innovative strategies to streamline PET collection, sorting, and reintegration into production cycles, this study aligns with global sustainability targets and offers practical solutions to foster a circular economy in Bangladesh’s beverage industry.
