Ischemic sciatic neuropathy and pelvic bone infarction following embolization of bilateral internal iliac artery aneurysms: A case report

An 82-year-old man underwent bilateral internal iliac artery (IIA) embolization for IIA aneurysms and endovascular repair for an abdominal aortic aneurysm. The bilateral IIA branches were embolized with coils and Amplatzer Vascular Plugs, and N-butyl cyanoacrylate (NBCA) was used for the left superior lateral sacral artery. Postprocedure, the patient developed numbness, pain, and walking difficulty. He was diagnosed with ischemic sciatic neuropathy, and magnetic resonance imaging revealed pelvic bone infarction. NBCA injection and IIA embolization were considered the causes. These complications highlight the risk of ischemic effects. We recommend using coils instead of NBCA for IIA branch embolization.

Abstract

An 82-year-old man underwent bilateral internal iliac artery (IIA) embolization for IIA aneurysms and endovascular repair for an abdominal aortic aneurysm. NBCA injection and IIA embolization were considered the causes. These complications highlight the risk of ischemic effects. We recommend using coils instead of NBCA for IIA branch embolization.
