Essence and Characteristics of Abandoned Military Buildings - Modern Development Opportunities

The abandoned military buildings represent a large volume of built resources that have the potential for future development and reuse. Abandoned military barracks buildings are characterized by specific volume-spatial and architectural-functional features, which dictate the various possibilities for their reuse in the context of the modern needs of society. Another important factor influencing their harmonious integration into the modern urban environment is their characteristic urban planning organization, both within the limits of the military territory and in terms of the interaction of the territory with the active urban parts. The paper traces and analyzes these characteristics in order to derive concrete solutions to address the problems of this degrading stock.

Abstract

The abandoned military buildings represent a large volume of built resources that have the potential for future development and reuse. Abandoned military barracks buildings are characterized by specific volume-spatial and architectural-functional features, which dictate the various possibilities for their reuse in the context of the modern needs of society. Another important factor influencing their harmonious integration into the modern urban environment is their characteristic urban planning organization, both within the limits of the military territory and in terms of the interaction of the territory with the active urban parts. The paper traces and analyzes these characteristics in order to derive concrete solutions to address the problems of this degrading stock.
