The Translational Tension and Ironic Reconstruction of the Metaphorical Title in “<i>Brave New World</i>” from a Skopos Theory Perspective —A Study on the Semantic Shift from “<i>Brave New World</i>” to “美丽新世界”

本文以德国功能学派的目的论(Skopos Theory)为理论框架，以赫胥黎的反乌托邦经典《美丽新世界》的标题翻译为研究对象，重点考察汉译标题“美丽新世界”对英文原标题“Brave New World”所蕴含的反讽意义的传递与重构过程。研究表明，译者严格遵循目的论“目的决定手段”的核心原则，通过策略性的语言形式调整和文本意义重构，成功实现了译文预期功能。这种基于目的论的翻译策略不仅有效地传达了原作的反乌托邦主题，更凸显了文学翻译在跨文化意识形态传递中的创造性转化能力。Taking Skopos Theory as the theoretical framework, this paper focuses on the translation of the title of Huxley’s anti-utopian classic “Brave New World”, and examines the process of transferring and reconstructing the ironic meaning of the Chinese translation of the title to that of the original English title “Brave New World”. The study shows that the translators strictly follow the core principle of the Skopos Theory and successfully realize the expected function of the translated text by strategically adjusting the linguistic form and reconstructing the meaning of the text. This translation strategy based on the Skopos Theory not only effectively conveys the anti-utopian theme of the original work, but also highlights the creative transformation ability of literary translation in the transmission of cross-cultural ideology.
