Art in publications of the magazine "Leningrad" during the Great Patriotic War
The Soviet illustrated magazine "Leningrad" (1940–1946) was regularly published during the Great Patriotic War in Leningrad, representing the facts of military and cultural life of the "city-front". Part of its content is devoted to art and architecture. The magazine is interesting for its artistic design and art criticism. Scientists, architects, front-line artists, heads of book illustration, posters and caricatures who remained in Leningrad were associated with the magazine. Thepages of "Leningrad" feature the names of P. Kornilov, E. Gollerbach, I. I. Fomin, A. Ostroumova-Lebedeva, K. Rudakov, V. Konashevich, B. Leo. The magazine is illustrated with a large number of graphic works on the theme of thesiege of Leningrad (A.Pakhomov, V. Uspensky, S. Vishnevetskaya, S. Yudovin and others). The magazine’s publications reflected the reaction to the wartime destruction of the palace and park ensembles near Leningrad after their liberation in 1944. A study of the magazine’s contents reveals details of the general state of the artistic life of Leningrad that were previously unnoticed and are potentially significant for special studies of the work of Soviet wartime artists and historiography.
