Marigold: A multifunctional garden plant

Marigold (Tagetes spp.) is cultivated extensively across India and plays a prominent role among commercial flower crops because of its versatility and ease of cultivation. Widely used as a cut flower, loose flower, and pot plant, it is an integral component in religious ceremonies, social functions, and landscape decoration. Marigold also contributes to sustainable agriculture by acting as a companion plant that repels pests, attracts beneficial insects, and improves soil health. In addition, its rich phytochemical profile- including compounds such as lutein, Tagetes oil, and quercetagetin, supports various medicinal, cosmetic, and industrial applications. With strong market demand during festivals marigold’s economic viability is further enhanced by efficient marketing and post-harvest management systems.
