El cuento de la criada, de Margaret Atwood, en la prensa española: impacto y recepción de la novela distópica tras su adaptación audiovisual

This study examines the reception of Margaret Atwood’s The Handmaid’s Tale in the Spanish press, following the launch of the streaming series of the same name in 2017. The novel, which projects a dystopian future where women in general, and the Handmaids in particular, are oppressed by a theocratic regime, gained relevance after the election of Donal Trump, drawing parallels between the novel and the ongoing political context. Through the analysis of paratexts, this article aims to evaluate how these texts shaped public opinion and highlighted the novel’s connection to feminism. It suggests that both the series and the prologue by Atwood added to the reedition of the novel in Spanish influenced the reviews and the debates around the dystopia, which was revalorised as a symbol of the struggle against patriarchal oppression and as a key work of contemporary feminist literature.
