A Typological Approach to the Gamer's Personality in Foreign Studies

The article presents an analytical review of foreign studies of gamer's typology. 9 typologies developed by game creators (R. Bartle), specialists in working with information systems (J. Hamari, L. Nacke), data analysts (A. Drachen, N. Yee), practitioners in the field of gamification (A. Marczewski), psychologists (S. Tisseron, L.S. Whang, F.-C. Tseng). The empirical nature of a number of typologies as a request of the gaming industry is emphasized. All typologies have common grounds related to the motivational profile of a gamer's personality and his needs. The differences include the nature of the connection with the game (lack of connection, the possibility/complexity of application for other games), the availability of diagnostic tools and its potential in studying the personality of a gamer, the possibilities of use in psychological practices and gamification projects. A brief analysis of a number of typologies is presented and emphasis is placed on the typologies of N. Yee, S. Tisserona, L. Nacke, A. Marczewski. The importance of adapting the questionnaire by S. Tisserona and D. Khayat (QTIJV) to realize the potential of a video game in research and practical projects related to gamer psychology is emphasized.
