Przypadek Mieczysława Birnbauma (1889-1940) – dane encyklopedyczne (rozważania o wpływie na wybory tłumacza)i strategia translatorska
THE CASE OF MIECZYSLAW BIRNBAUM (1889-1940) – ENCYCLOPAEDIC DATA, SPECULATIONS AND TRANSLATION STRATEGY The article revisits one of today’s forgotten translators, Mieczysław Birnbaum (pseudonym Binom). Bibliographic data concerning both him and his close relatives, which are not always certain, are examined. The potential influence of the cultural environment in which he was raised on his translation decisions are also considered. Additionally, the translations authored by him have been brought back into focus. A practical analysis of selected examples of Birnbaum’s translations highlighted distinctive elements of his translational work, thereby identifying his approach as a strategy of approximation.
