Zarys biografii translatorskiej Stefana Srebrnego
STEFAN SREBRNY: AN OUTLINE OF A TRANSLATOR’S BIOGRAPHYSince the cultural turn in translation studies the research on translator studies has become increasingly intensive. Such research reinvests a translator with his/her subjectivity. The archive turn, in its part, made scholars aware of how important the translators’ archives are; that they bring to light the practices of translators and prove to what degree translators are dependent on various issues, involved in many activities, and how complicated and multilayered their work is. Research of this kind often makes possible the reconstruction of unknown translators’ biographies. The case of Stefan Srebrny (1890-1962) is somewhat different. He was one of the most important, well-known and recognized classicists of 20th-century Poland. In spite of his renown, his biography has not been produced. The Old Prints and Manuscripts Collection in the Main Library of Nicolaus Copernicus University holds a set of manuscripts and documents by Stefan Srebrny which is a good starting point to reconstruct his translator biography. The aim of this article is to draw an outline of this biography.
