Local Identity of the New Bulgarian Mountain House From the Beginning of the 21st Century

Тhis paper explores the possible formation of a new architectural language of the Bulgarian mountain house between 2001 and 2023. The author starts from the notion that contemporary Bulgarian architecture has lost its relevance in the international and regional fields and proposes the idea that one of the possible reasons for that is the lack of clear local identity and specific visual language. He then goes on to list the main reasons helping the formation of a homogenous local identity and selects a range of renowned contemporary Bulgarian houses to analyze. The examples are ordered according to their morphology and then their common characteristics are grouped in three clusters – relation to the context, morphology and functionality, architectural language. The principles thus structured are an attempt to describe and analyze the inception of a new architecture of the Bulgarian mountain house.
