Advancements in the application of repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation combined with acupuncture for treating hand dysfunction in patients with ischemic stroke

Hand function impairment is a common and challenging sequela of ischemic stroke, significantly impacting patients' quality of life. In recent years, repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) and acupuncture have garnered considerable attention for their potential to improve hand function after stroke. This review examines the underlying mechanisms and clinical evidence supporting the use of rTMS and acupuncture, emphasizing their synergistic effects when used in combination. Current research indicates that rTMS and acupuncture may provide complementary benefits in promoting nervous system recovery and improving hand function in patients with ischemic stroke. However, further large-scale clinical trials are needed to establish optimal treatment protocols and to evaluate the long-term efficacy of this combined approach.
