Examining the current advancements in intelligent multilevel inverters for electric vehicle charging applications

This review examines the latest advancements in intelligent multilevel inverters (MLIs) with a focus on their integration into electric vehicle (EV) charging systems. MLIs are increasingly utilized in EV infrastructure due to their ability to enhance power conversion efficiency, reduce total harmonic distortion, and improve the overall quality and reliability of power delivery. A major focus is placed on Model Predictive Control (MPC), which has emerged as a leading control method in recent MLI designs. MPC provides accurate real-time control by predicting future system behavior and optimizing the inverter’s switching actions to regulate output voltage and current. Its predictive capability and fast dynamic response make it especially suitable for the demanding and variable conditions encountered in EV charging applications. The review also explores the growing use of intelligent control approaches, including machine learning techniques and artificial neural networks. These data-driven methods enable adaptive behavior, allowing MLIs to automatically respond to changes in load, optimize performance under uncertain conditions, and detect and mitigate faults in real time.By analyzing the combined impact of MPC and artificial intelligence on multilevel inverter technologies, this review offers valuable insights into the development of next-generation smart EV chargers. The findings aim to inform ongoing research and practical implementation efforts in the field of power electronics for sustainable and intelligent transportation systems.
