Comprehensive Management of Hypotaurodontic Primary Molars with Dental Caries and Pulp Pathology: A Rare Case Report
Taurodontism is a developmental anomaly characterized by enlarged tooth crowns at the expense of the root. It appears more frequently as an isolated anomaly, but its association with syndromes and other abnormalities have also been reported. Although commonly associated with permanent teeth, its occurrence in primary molars is rare. This case report presents the comprehensive management of mandibular primary molars with hypotaurodontism in a 5-year-old female child. The child had dental caries with chronic irreversible pulpitis in hypotaurodauntic teeth 74 and 75, accompanied by pathological root resorption in 74. Treatment included a full mouth rehabilitation including multi-visit pulpectomy for 75, extraction and space maintainer for 74. A follow-up period of 18 months revealed an accelerated eruption of permanent teeth potentially linked to taurodontism. This case highlights challenges in managing taurodont teeth and underscores the need for long-term monitoring to optimize clinical outcomes.
