Sustainable Waste Treatment Project through Maggot Cultivation to Increase Awareness Students of the Environment
Background: Adiwiyata schools are responsible for developing environmentally conscious character to support sustainable development. Students' concern for the environment can be formed through knowledge and waste management skills, aiming to increase students' environmental awareness in Adiwiyata schools. Method: The activity started with socialization about the sustainable waste management project, followed by training on organic waste processing using maggot farming and project-based learning. During the project-based learning, mentoring and evaluation were conducted periodically. The activity involved 60 students. The success of this service activity is based on the pretest-posttest results and the students' products/works. Results: The response from participants showed that 69.67% felt that the socialization increased their knowledge. The BSF maggot farming training improved participants' knowledge, skills, awareness, and motivation, with pretest-posttest scores increasing by 0.17-0.53. The maggot products produced included 11 types: Horta dolls, hand sanitizer, scrub, wet cat food, maggot flour, poultry supplements, fish nutrition, livestock milk, maggot pellets, roasted maggots, and kasgot. This activity successfully achieved the environmental management awareness indicator. Conclusion: Students' environmental awareness improved with the sustainable waste management project. Based on pretest-posttest scores, all aspects showed improvement, and students could process BSF maggots into various products.
