"новый" (novyj) and "новенький" (noven'kij ) in the Cycle of Ivan Bu-nin's Stories «Dark Alleys»: Semantics and Functions

The purpose of the article is to analyze the semantics of the word new and the diminutive new and describe their functioning in the cycle of short stories by I. A. Bunin "Dark Alleys". The object of the study is the semantics of these words, and the subject is the semantic changes associated with their functioning in a literary text. The research material was a card file with a volume of 61 word usage. The linguistic material was studied using traditional methods of descriptive, semantic, contextual and lexicographic analysis. The meanings of the words novyj (new) and noven'kij (diminutive new) new, which are characteristic of the studied cycle, are identified and described. It is shown that the anthropocentricity of the semantics of these is due to objective factors (time of origin, manufacture) and the subjective experience of a person who is faced with "other, different" or "not what it was before." The studied words are most often used by I. A. Bunin when describing the world of everyday life, characterizing everyday objects. The largest thematic groups of words, combined with the words new, new, are "Clothes", "Cultural objects", "Human relationships".
