Tiburtine Sibyl in the Orthodox Sermon of the Kyivan Metropolitanate at the Turn of the 16th — 17th Сenturies

During the period of active development of preaching in the East Slavic lands of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, the genre of teaching Gospels, which included new religious subjects, became very popular. In one of the editions of the teaching Gospel, the story of Tiburtine Sibyl’s prophecy to the Roman Emperor Octavian Augustus about the birth of Christ has been preserved. The article shows the peculiarities of the existence of stories about Sibyls in Orthodox literature in the 16th — 17th centuries. in the Moscow state and the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. The penetration of the Sibylline prophecy into the preaching text led to the formation of a new function of the text: coming out of theological, monastic literature, the prophecy became not just an “entertaining” reading, but turned into an additional argument in favor of the Divinity of Christ, became an instrument of the oratory of preaching among Orthodox parishioners.
