Of the “Order Georgianskago”, “Barneretskago”, “Balneiskago” and “Kniggteskago”: the English Knighthood in the Church Slavonic Translation of “Britannia” by W. Camden of the mid-17th Century

This article deals with information about the English chivalry that was transferred from the historical and topographic treatise by the famous antiquary W. Camden, “Britannia”, to its Church Slavonic translation. The latter was created by order of Patriarch Nikon by the elder Isaiah, a member of the translation circle of Epiphanius Slavinetsky in the Chudov Monastery, and was called “Vritannia”. Due to the well-founded study of the antiquarian, the Russian scribe became aware of the most detailed description of this social group. The article examines how accurately Isaiah managed to interpret not only the terminology of the original, but also W. Camden’s main ideas about the boundaries and internal stratification of the English chivalry.
