Augmented Reality Applications in Education: Challenges and Opportunities
Augmented Reality is used to boost education by offering the students the facilities of immersive and interactive learning experiences. This research deals with the problems and the possibilities of the incorporation of AR applications in the schools through the literature review and the experimental research. The comparison of marker-based AR algorithms shows the information about marker detection accuracy (85–92%), tracking stability (7–9) and rendering efficiency (25–30 FPS), which stresses the importance of the balance between these three factors for the best AR experience. The evaluation of Simultaneous Localization and Mapping (SLAM) algorithms also shows that the mapping accuracy (88-92%) and the trajectory estimation (0) are reliable. The Artificial Reality (AR) controller above the user's head should record the movement of the user to the left and right as well as real-time performance (20–30 FPS), thus proving the necessity of the correct spatial mapping and the efficient trajectory estimation in the AR environment. Besides, the comparison of image recognition algorithms shows that the detection accuracy (85-92%), processing speed (25–40 ms), and robustness (7–9) are the main factors for the scene, thus, the need for fast and accurate object recognition for smooth AR interactions is emphasized. In general, this research gives meaningful information about the possible of AR technology to boost learning outcomes, on the other hand it also highlights the important factors that should be taken into account in order to accomplish its integration into educational practices.
