Automatic Following Shopping Cart with Bluetooth Connectivity and Obstacle Avoidance

This paper presents the design and development of an autonomous shopping cart that follows the user through the use of ultrasonic sensors and Bluetooth communication. The cart is designed to provide hands-free shopping by autonomously tracking the user's movements and maintaining a set distance. The core functionality is powered by an Arduino micro controller, which processes sensor data and controls the cart's movement. DC motors provide forward and backward motion, while a servo motor steers the cart in the direction of the user. The system includes an integrated obstacle detection mechanism using ultrasonic sensors to prevent collisions, ensuring safe navigation in crowded environments. Audio feedback is provided to the user in real-time, announcing directional changes such as “Turning left” or “Turning right.” The Bluetooth module enables seamless communication with the user's smartphone, allowing the cart to receive commands like starting, stopping, or adjusting the following mode. This shopping cart aims to enhance user convenience, particularly for individuals with mobility challenges, and represents a significant advancement in automation technology for retail environments. The proposed system offers a novel, accessible, and efficient solution to the limitations of traditional shopping carts by combining autonomous navigation with user-friendly features, contributing to a better shopping experience for a wide range of users.
