Integrated Avalanche Detection And Rescue System Using IoT and Communication Networks

Over 150 people are killed by avalanches each year, so rescue systems must be timely and effective. Our AI-based system is equipped with both thermal and ground-penetrating radar and can immediately identify a patient stuck on the ground or buried under snow. Even hazardous and inaccessible regions are made easy to communicate with skiers equipped with LoRa and Zigbee technologies between victims and rescuers as well as tracking one’s location in real time. Based on data obtained from these devices, our AI models have been more than successful at predicting locations of critical accidents to optimize resources, accelerate rescue operations, and perhaps entrust such unenviable speed and accuracy on rescuers. In an avalanche, the moment the device inside the victim’s body is struck, then temperature sensors, as well as the GPS units, start transmitting coordinates from that source to base camp for initiating a timely coordinated reaction. Our systems, with the latest technology and innovative approaches dramatically improve rescue operations and bring new hope to critical conditions. Our prototype is, in fact, the progress so far toward managing disasters, saving tens of thousands of lives, and protecting communities against the disastrous after-effects of avalanches. Our solutions set new norms for responses to avalanches, creating safer environments for recreational and professional activities in high-risk areas through real-time data and analytics with prediction.
