Carbon Storage and Sequestration Potential of Aboveground Biomass of Neem Trees in Southern Regions of Chennai
Urban areas are increasingly facing challenges due to climate change and environmental degradation. This necessitates the exploration of nature-based solutions to address these issues. The study focuses on investigating the carbon storage and sequestration potential of neem trees in the southern regions of Chennai, India. Neem trees are commonly found in urban landscapes due to their resilience, adaptability, and ecological benefits. By conducting field assessments and analysis, we were able to quantify the carbon content of neem tree biomass and evaluate its role in reducing atmospheric carbon dioxide levels. Our methodology included measuring tree dimensions, such as diameter at breast height (DBH) and height, and analyzing tree components like branches, leaves, and trunk wood for carbon content. We used established algometric equations to estimate biomass and carbon stocks. Initial findings indicate that neem tree biomass has a significant carbon storage capacity, especially in mature trees with substantial carbon sequestration potential. The aboveground biomass of neem trees plays a crucial role in urban carbon stocks, emphasizing the importance of these trees in climate change mitigation efforts Moreover, our study delves into factors that influence carbon storage in neem trees, such as age, health, and environmental conditions. We also discuss the implications of urban forestry practices, such as tree planting programs and maintenance strategies, in maximizing the carbon sequestration benefits from neem tree populations. The study also explores the role of community engagement in enhancing urban forestry initiatives, particularly through public awareness programs and participatory tree planting drives. Integrating neem trees into urban planning frameworks can serve as a cost-effective strategy to combat the dual challenges of urban heat islands and carbon emissions. Moreover, the co-benefits of neem trees, such as their medicinal properties and pest-repellent characteristics, highlight their multifunctional value in urban ecosystems. This research provides valuable insights in to contribution of neem trees to urban carbon dynamics and highlights their potential as a nature - based solution for climate change mitigation in Chennai southern regions. By aligning urban forestry practices with broader environmental policies, this research advocates for the adoption of nature-based solutions to create sustainable and livable cities. This research provides valuable insights in to contribution of neem tress to urban carbon dynamics and highlights potential of neem trees, this study informs sustainable urban forestry strategies and policy interventions aimed at enhancing climate resilience and environmental sustainability.
