Discrete Particle Swarm Optimization Technique for an Optimal Design of Energy Efficient Induction Motor
It is indeed a fact that induction motors (IM) contributes a major role in almost all industrial and domestic applications. In case of general purpose applications, 3 phase squirrel cage induction motors having relatively less efficiency (say at IE1 and IE2 level of 12615 / 60034) due to higher loss in copper, iron friction and windage. The international standard IEC 60034 – 1 provides a range from IE2 to IE5 in its latest version. Due to lower efficiency and higher input power, the charges paid by the end users are also high. Therefore, users of such motors prefer energy-efficient motors to reduce their recurring expenditure. Development of higher IE level efficiency is need of the hour and motor manufacturers also attempting to develop such motors of high / premium efficiency motors. This work aims at optimizing the variables during the design of the motor using the Discrete Particle Swarm algorithm (PSO) for maximizing the efficiency of the motor and minimizing the losses. These variables are chosen accordingly considering the task and are optimized. MATLAB coding is used as a platform / tool to execute the DPSO algorithm.
