Evaluation of Ignition of Explosive Atmospheres by Radio Frequency Electromagnetic Fields
Radio frequency electromagnetic radiation is a potential hazard for the ignition of explosive atmospheres. High power transmitters such as radio, TV, radar as well as cellphone base stations can induce electric currents and voltages in conducting infrastructure. If this occurs in an area where there is a flammable atmosphere, the hazard exists. A spark with sufficient energy could ignite the atmosphere. This paper will analyze the possibility of risk of ignition of flammable atmospheres due to the radio frequency transmitters, as well as give guidelines for prevention and protection prescribed by international standards.
