Monolithic Solid C-Shaped Armatures in Electromagnetic Railgun

In electromagnetic railgun systems, the armature serves as a critical component that converts electrical energy into the kinetic energy of projectiles. The performance of the armature directly impacts the overall system efficiency, making the study of its influence on launch performance a fundamental aspect of advancing the application of electromagnetic railguns in practical scenarios. The solid C-shaped armature, with its simple structure and reliable contact during the launch process, has become the most widely used type of armature in the field of electromagnetic launching. This article begins by outlining the basic functional requirements of solid armatures, including current-carrying capacity, mechanical preload, and electromagnetic contact pressure. Based on these requirements, recent research on solid C-shaped armatures, both domestic and international, is summarized. Then this article discusses the material performance requirements for C-shaped armatures during the electromagnetic launch process and explains why aluminum alloys have become the predominant materials used. Furthermore, the evolution of armature structural design is reviewed, and the research on optimizing armature performance is summarized. Finally, this article concludes with an overview of the design requirements and goals for solid C-shaped armatures, offering insights into future armature design.
