User Expectations, Requirements, and Applications of Exoskeletons: Insights from a Survey
As a result of the growing prevalence of work-related musculoskeletal disorders and the need for improved occupational safety, exoskeletons are increasingly being explored as a solution to enhance ergonomic conditions in various industries. Exoskeletons offer the potential to alleviate physical strain and reduce health-related downtimes among workers performing repetitive or strenuous tasks. This paper presents findings from a survey exploring user expectations, requirements, and applications of exoskeletons. The study involved 50 participants, comprising 28 employees from companies in the logistics and healthcare sectors and 22 students from technical degree programs. The results highlight significant expectations regarding the positive impact of exoskeletons on ergonomic working conditions, job attractiveness, and reduction in sick leave. However, the survey also identifies major current barriers, such as costs, employee acceptance, and lack of knowledge or experience. Consequently, these insights provide a comprehensive understanding of the potentials and challenges associated with exoskeleton implementation in practice.
