CONTRIBUTION OF SOME CLASSES OF CAUSES OF DEATH TO THE CHANGE IN LIFE EXPECTANCY IN THE REGIONS OF THE NORTHWESTERN FEDERAL DISTRICT
The paper continues the research in the field of mortality/ life expectancy (LE) of the population of the regions of the Northwestern Federal District of Russia (NWFD). The LE in Russia as a whole and in its regions was affected by the COVID-19 pandemic, so this paper focuses on the period 2020–2022. In all regions of the NWFD, both men and women showed a decrease in the LE in 2020–2021, followed by an increase in 2022. The classes of causes of death which influenced the change in life expectancy at birth (LE0) of the male/female population of the NWFD regions in the period 2020–2022 were studied. The classes of causes that made the greatest contribution to this increase and the classes of causes that made a negative contribution to the increase in LE0 in the regions of the NWFD were identified. The greatest increase in LE0 of men in the regions of the NWFD was due to the contribution of such classes of causes of death as the circulatory system diseases, COVID, neoplasms and other causes of death. The increase in LE0 of women was most affected by the decrease in mortality, as in the case of the male population, from the circulatory system diseases and neoplasms, as well as from unspecified causes of death. COVID-19 mortality had a negative impact on the LE0 of women in the regions of the NWFD. The impact of mortality from external causes on male life expectancy is not so clear-cut: in a number of regions it had a negative impact on life expectancy, while in others it made a significant contribution to the increase in this indicator.
