Dispersión de Melinis repens (Willd.) Zizka subsp. repens (Poaceae) en Tenerife, Islas Canarias.
Melinis repens (Willd.) Zizka subsp. repens, a grass native to Africa and the southwest of the Arabian peninsula, has established itself in tropical and subtropical regions of the world, including the island of Tenerife (Canary Islands). The first reports in the Canary Islands date back to the 40s of the last century, although its presence could be earlier given the confusion with the native Tricholaena teneriffae (L.f.) Link. In numerous areas of the world it is considered to have invasive behavior, while in Spain it is not included in the Catalog of invasive alien species. Its wide distribution on the island of Tenerife, the appearance and dispersal in the Iberian Peninsula and the first records in Europe, along with the high seed production and high percentage of viability make its inclusion in the list of invasive alien species advisable, to give legal coverage for the application of strategies for its control and eradication.
