The Analysis of Dynamic Response by Combining the Hertz Contact with Two-Degree-of-Freedom Model in Intelligent Compaction

Intelligent compaction (IC) technology plays a role in the construction of soil subgrade for quality control and assurance (QC/QA). The interaction between vibratory rollers and packing is the most important theoretical basis for studying the vibration pressure process. A new two-degree-of-freedom (2DOF) coupling model is built by combining hertz contact with traditional. We analyzed the drum acceleration, displacement, and contact force using different compacted soil moduli and damping coefficients loaded with different vibration frequencies, excitation force amplitudes, and roller speeds. The results show that the nonlinearity of the contact and unidirectional damp coefficient accelerated the distortion. The drum jump caused by excitation most strongly influences the nonlinearity of the contact. Modulus of subgrade, damp coefficient-in, and amplitude of excitation are positively related to drum jumps, whereas vibration frequency is negatively related. The intelligent compaction meter value (CMV) increases with the driving speed. Once the drum jumps, the subharmonic components rapidly rise; therefore, the resonance meter value (RMV) and not the CMV is used to determine the compaction quality to ensure a more precise goal.
