Innovative Transfer Method for Rib Coaptation Plate in Thoracoscopic Fixation of Rib Fractures

Abstract

Purpose
Complete video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery for rib fracture has gained extensive clinical recognition. Precise placement and robust fixation of rib coaptation plates are crucial for the success of this technique. However, the procedure frequently encounters challenges due to limitations imposed by the size of the incisions and the anatomical location of the fractures. To address these challenges, this study introduces an innovative rib plate transfer method in thoracoscopic fixation of rib fractures.
Description
The T-tube transfer technique replaces traditional instruments with a trimmed latex T-tube, allowing flexible navigation and accurate placement of shape-memory alloy plates under thoracoscopic guidance.
Evaluation
This technique was applied in 29 patients with multiple rib fractures. All cases achieved stable fixation with satisfactory perioperative outcomes. The approach simplified manipulation, minimized incision and instrument interference, and allowed reliable stabilization, even in challenging anatomical regions.
Conclusions
The T-tube transfer technique enhances both maneuverability and fixation precision in thoracoscopic surgery, addressing the challenges posed by traditional methods. This method overcomes the angle limitations of traditional surgical instruments, enabling multiangle and multiregional rib fixation.
