Mitigating Thermal Discomfort in Multiple Occupancy Work Spaces: Frugal Approaches Unite
In work paces with multiple occupancy, thermal discomfort due to non-uniform cooling is a major problem. We first demonstrate the inevitability of non-uniform cooling -using CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) analysis of real-world spaces. This motivates us to study the HVAC (heating, ventilation and air-conditioning) pathways. We identify certain cooling components as Lazy AC units, a less recognized, yet significant, contributor to non-uniform cooling. We show that the effect of lazy ACs can be through clever scheduling decisions, i.e., by forcing the ACs to work at appropriate times. In addition, a few small fans can enhance the thermal experience of the occupants under non-uniform cooling. These two interventions, individually or in combination, can produce a comprehensive and effective frugal solution that results in a high degree of thermal comfort control. It also saves energy.
