Solution space exploration in a High Mix Low Volume Manufacturing Environment
Strategic, tactical and operational decisions within manufacturing companies are typically based on a combination of available (historical) data, forecasted data, and personal perspectives. These (Key) Performance Indicators are often calculated values accompanied by a subjectively determined target. Solution space explorations represented by, e.g. surface plots allow for a better understanding of the environment around the manufacturing indicators and provide a visual insight in areas with potential risks or opportunities. This requires data points to be derived from simulations in an n-dimensional environment, but also significant commitment of decision-makers. The approach acts as a visual aid in the decision-making process on different levels of aggregation. In order to establish and explore the solution spaces, a research-by-design approach was used to model and simulate an existing production line at a manufacturer.
