Design and simulation of a reconfigurable machine tool for multi-part family production
The paper proposes a new Reconfigurable Machine Tool (RMT) design solution which offers customisable flexibility, unlike traditional machines, adapting quickly to different part families through the integration of modular components with customised electrical control systems, allowing for seamless integration and minimal downtime. Part family classification and selection of an automotive family of parts for RMT production, with focus on variability for testing the machines reconfiguration capacity was carried out using Group Technology (GT). Furthermore, various concepts were developed with three major themes from literature (i) leveraging modularity for longevity, (ii) emphasising structural stiffness for precision, and (iii) managing complex geometric shapes. Finally, the performance tests, including straightness, circularity, and positional accuracy were conducted to assess consistency along the X, Y, and Z axes of the core machine.
