Carborundum Refractory Concretes Based on Artificial Ceramic Binder

This article considers a method for increasing the mechanical strength and corrosion resistance of aluminosilicate refractories to glass melts and slag. For this purpose, artificial ceramic binders (ACB) of mullite-carborundum composition were synthesized using the technology of highly concentrated ceramic binder suspensions (HCBS). The morphological characteristics and grain size of ACB were analyzed, and the structure and physical and mechanical properties of sintered products were investigated. It was found that nanodispersed particles are formed as a result of mechanochemical processes occurring during joint milling. The average particle size was about 30–40 nm. Heat-treated ACB-based samples consist of crystalline phases of corundum, mullite, and SiC, which are uniformly distributed in the material. It was shown that, with an increase in the annealing temperature, the physical and mechanical properties increase. Introduction of mullite-carborundum binder into the composition of high-alumina fireclay refractories resulted in an improvement in the physical and mechanical properties and corrosion resistance to glass melts and slag. It was shown that refractories containing 50% ACB have the most favorable physical and mechanical properties. Compared to the factory sample, the experimental samples demonstrated a significant improvement in corrosion resistance to glass melts and slag by 90 and 94%, respectively.
