Peculiarities of Addressing Educational Losses Among Younger Schoolchildren in the Integrated Course ‘I Explore the World’
The article addresses the pressing issue of overcoming educational losses among younger schoolchildren in Ukraine under the current challenges — the pandemic, martial law, and, consequently, the disruption of the educational process and the transition to remote or blended learning. The author emphasizes the need to develop metacompetencies in learners, particularly metacognition as the ability for self- directed learning. The development of functional literacy plays a significant role in overcoming educational losses, enabling students to effectively apply acquired knowledge in real- life situations. Special attention is given to the use of a multisensory approach in education, which takes into account students’ perceptual modalities — visual, auditory, and kinesthetic — and proves to be effective in mastering the material. The role of the textbook as a tool for addressing knowledge gaps is analyzed, highlighting its innovative structure, genre diversity of texts, use of glossaries, task systems adapted to different sensory channels, and more. The article also explores practical tools for identifying and correcting educational gaps, particularly diagnostic test cards that help detect individual student knowledge deficits and effectively address them. Special emphasis is placed on the importance of social-emotional learning, which provides support for children during times of crisis. The author underscores that the effective combination of innovative pedagogical approaches and a sensitive response to students’ needs is the key to overcoming educational losses and ensuring quality education.
