Instrument to identify barriers and facilitators to reporting self-inflicted violence

Abstract Objective To develop and analyze the validity evidence of an instrument to identify barriers and facilitators to reporting self-harm violence. Methods This study was guided by Pasquali’s methodological framework and the theoretical procedure was based on the theoretical structure of the Theoretical Domains Framework. Face and content validations were performed by 20 experts in self-inflicted violence and the construct was validated by 84 health professionals. Data were collected in an online form and analyzed by the Content Validity Index, First-order Agreement Coefficient of Gwet and Exploratory Factor Analysis. Results The instrument was structured for self-completion with responses on a five-point Likert scale. The face and content validations met the recommended criteria (CVI≥0.8) and achieved reliability classified as very good (AC1: 0.9552; SD: 0.0184; CI: 0.917-0.993; p=0.0000). In the construct validation, six items were removed (KMO<0.50). The Parallel Analysis graph showed the identification of six factors and 16 items with confirmation of overall reliability (McDonald’s ω: 0.9473). Conclusion This study made it possible to provide a public domain instrument, valid for the population studied, which allows identifying barriers and facilitators to reporting self-inflicted violence. Identifying influences helps in planning actions to strengthen reporting and prevent self-inflicted violence.
