A tactile pedestrian signal control method based on yellow flashing

Pedestrian crossings often experience traffic accidents. Control measures like Fixed-cycle Signal Control, Touch Signal Control, and No-signal Control are used. Fixed-cycle signal control can delay traffic with few pedestrians, while Touch signal control often malfunction, pedestrian phase protection cannot be provided, risking conflicts. No-signal control can lead to traffic jams with many pedestrians and fast vehicle speeds with fewer pedestrians, raising accident risks. This study presents a signal control method integrating pedestrian tactile feedback and amber flashing signals, adapting to pedestrian crossing needs. When no pedestrian requests are made, the vehicle signal flashes yellow, advising caution. With pedestrian requests, the system activates Push Button mode to alternate between pedestrian and vehicle rights. For high pedestrian traffic, it shifts to Fixed-cycle signal control. The system was deployed in the Fuxingqiao section within Wucheng District of Jinhua City. A 9-day video analysis showed the system effectively improves safety and reduces congestion. Integrating it with the urban green wave band could further enhance road efficiency.
