Electric bicycle-motor vehicle conflict assessment method based on maximum remaining reaction time

Differentiating between normal and dangerous interactions between electric bicycles (EB) and motor vehicles (MV) is a pressing traffic safety issue. EB's high speed, strong mobility, and variable routes complicate its interaction with MV, posing significant security risks. This paper introduces the maximum residual reaction time (MRRT) index, which considers EB-MV distance, speed, driver avoidance, and EB path uncertainty to identify four conflict types: Crossing Conflict (CC), Head-On Conflict (HC), Rear-End Conflict (RC), Sideswipe Conflict (SC) with a single measurement. Testing on 200 real events shows MRRT improves conflict recognition accuracy by 20% to 40% compared to traditional TTC and PET indicators. The research offers a quantitative method to assess EB-MV conflict risk, significantly enhancing intersection traffic safety.
