Active Redundancy in Isolated DC-DC Converters: A Modular Solution for Fault Tolerance

As the power capacity of power electronic converters increases to high power levels, the various components present in these converters are subjected to higher internal and environmental stresses. As such, the reliability and fault tolerance capabilities of high power converters becomes a topic high relevance. This paper proposes a highly modular fault tolerant solution and a switching scheme for isolated DC-DC converters. Further, the proposed solution is compared to existing fault tolerance methods and its advantages over contemporary methods are highlighted.

Abstract

As the power capacity of power electronic converters increases to high power levels, the various components present in these converters are subjected to higher internal and environmental stresses. As such, the reliability and fault tolerance capabilities of high power converters becomes a topic high relevance. This paper proposes a highly modular fault tolerant solution and a switching scheme for isolated DC-DC converters. Further, the proposed solution is compared to existing fault tolerance methods and its advantages over contemporary methods are highlighted.
